A bill of materials is only useful if making something actually moves the stock it says it will.

Specifications, drawings and certificates attached to the run they belong to, so the person on the floor and the person answering an audit are looking at the same document.

Conversion cost, properly calculated
Materials are the easy part. The hours a thing takes are what most systems quietly leave in overhead.
Work centres priced per hour
A machine or a labour cell, each with its own hourly cost, so the difference between a cheap station and an expensive one shows up in the product rather than in general overhead.
Routings with setup and per-unit run time
The ordered operations to make a product, each at a work centre, separating the time it takes to set up from the time per unit. Batch size then changes unit cost the way it does in reality.
Conversion cost lands on the run
The routing computes the conversion cost for the quantity being made and it becomes the run labour cost - so a finished good is valued at materials plus the work that went into it.
Finished goods post to their own account
Production moves value from raw materials to finished goods in the ledger, through the same splitter every other inventory posting uses, so the balance sheet distinguishes what you bought from what you made.

Quality, and being able to prove it
The two questions after something goes wrong are "can we stop it shipping" and "what else came from that batch".
Inspections that gate completion
A pass or fail check stands between a run and being finished. Failing output is written off rather than quietly folded into good stock, which is the only version of this that means anything.
A quality record per run
What was checked, by whom, and what the result was - kept with the run rather than in a folder, so the evidence exists when a customer or an auditor asks.
Lots with a real lifecycle
Output is tracked in lots that move through quarantine, released, rejected and consumed - so stock awaiting inspection is genuinely not sellable rather than merely flagged.
Trace a defect back to its components
Each lot links to the run that produced it and the components that run consumed, so a fault found in the field narrows to a batch instead of a product line.
The details that took the longest
Small decisions you only make after getting them wrong.
Every one of these is a specific behaviour, chosen for a specific reason. They are the difference between software that demos well and software that survives a year of month-ends.
Setup time is separated from run time, so batch size changes unit cost
A routing holds setup and per-unit time per operation rather than one flat duration. Making ten of something and making a thousand do not cost the same per unit, and a system that stores a single figure cannot tell you which order is worth taking.
Rejected output is written off, not absorbed
A failed inspection removes the output rather than letting it settle into finished goods. Scrap that silently joins good stock overstates inventory, understates cost, and makes the yield figure meaningless - which is the figure you would use to fix the problem.
Production moves value between accounts, it does not just move quantities
A run debits finished goods and credits raw materials through the same splitter used by receipts and cost of sales. If production only moved quantities, the balance sheet would keep showing components you consumed weeks ago.
